Eric N has been part of The Arc of Opportunity's Individualized Employment Program since 2014. For more than a decade, he has been a valued employee at Great Wolf Lodge, where he works as a Laundry Attendant. Eric takes pride in his work and values the structure and routine that employment provides. He independently uses MART transportation to travel to and from work and has built strong relationships with his coworkers through his reliability and dedication.
Like many people, Eric performs best when he knows what to expect. Changes to established routines can be challenging and may create uncertainty and stress. This past year, Eric encountered a significant obstacle when Great Wolf Lodge implemented a new timekeeping system. What seemed like a simple workplace change required him to alter a routine he had followed successfully for years.
Previously, Eric clocked in as soon as he arrived at work. Under the new system, employees could not clock in until five minutes before their shift started. This meant Eric needed to enter the building, go to the laundry department, wait in the break room, and adjust the sequence of tasks that had become familiar and comfortable to him. Without support, this disruption to his routine could have jeopardized his long-term employment success.
Recognizing the challenge, Eric's Job Coach worked alongside him over a two-week period to help him learn and practice the new process. Through individualized coaching, encouragement, repetition, and problem-solving, Eric gradually became more comfortable with the change. The support was tailored to Eric's needs and focused on helping him build confidence while maintaining his independence.
The turning point came when Eric successfully completed the new routine on his own. What initially felt overwhelming became part of his regular workday. Although he occasionally benefits from reminders, he now confidently navigates the revised process independently.
Today, Eric continues to thrive at Great Wolf Lodge and is celebrating 12 years of dedicated employment. He consistently completes his responsibilities, including folding linens, loading and unloading washers and dryers, and performing light cleaning duties. His strong attendance record, commitment to his job, and ability to adapt to workplace changes demonstrate both personal growth and resilience.
Eric's story shows how individualized support can help people overcome barriers that might otherwise stand in the way of employment success. With the right guidance, encouragement, and opportunities, individuals can build confidence, strengthen independence, and continue contributing meaningfully to their workplaces and communities. At The Arc of Opportunity, we believe every person deserves the chance to pursue their goals, develop their strengths, and live a life filled with purpose, dignity, and belonging.
