Nick’s Journey: Growth, Independence, and Community

Nick has been with our ISS program since 2013, his journey has been a powerful reflection of resilience, growth, and the impact of strong community support.

Nick is a hard-working, caring, and loving husband who lives independently with his wife and their energetic cat, Daisy. Known for his great sense of humor and welcoming personality, Nick easily connects with others and brings warmth wherever he goes. While he may feel nervous trying new things at first, he never lets that stop him - choosing instead to lean in and grow.

Nick takes pride in his job at BJ’s, where he enjoys working and being part of a team. Outside of work, he fills his time with activities that bring him joy and connection. He loves spending time with friends and family, going on daily walks, and expressing his creativity through photography - capturing everything from dragonflies and birds to dolphins, turtles, and even tigers. He also enjoys playing games on his Xbox, tablet, and phone.

Each week, Nick attends Beacon of Hope, where he not only participates but also helps with fundraising efforts so he can continue attending. His commitment reflects both his dedication and appreciation for the opportunities available to him.

Over the years, Nick has made meaningful progress in advocating for himself and building independence. One of his biggest accomplishments has been taking charge of his medical care. While making phone calls to providers once felt overwhelming due to his speech impediment, Nick now confidently schedules and confirms his own appointments. Though he still feels nervous at times, he continues to push through and succeed.

Nick has also become increasingly resourceful and tech-savvy. When he discovers something helpful, he’s eager to share it with others. For example, he uses the “Fetch” app to scan receipts and earn points he can redeem later - an approach that supports both independence and financial awareness.

In the past year, Nick has continued to thrive, maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle while also opening his home to others. He has hosted gatherings with friends to play games, spend time together, and attend free community events in Leominster during the warm months.

Nick’s story is one of steady growth and determination. With the support of his family, friends, job coach, The Arc and the community, he continues to build confidence and independence every day. His journey truly reflects the mission of The Arc, showing what’s possible when people are supported, included, and empowered to reach their full potential.
