Finding Purpose, Finding a Voice

After retiring from Verizon, where she worked in the training department, Carol found herself drawn to direct care work. Though she had worked in several fields throughout her life, there was something uniquely meaningful about helping others live fuller, more independent lives. It gave her a sense of purpose and value that she had not experienced elsewhere.

Carol’s connection to The Arc began through her daughter, who attended one of The Arc’s programs. Through that relationship, she learned about the Adult Foster Care (AFC) program and eventually welcomed Megan into her home.

The beginning was not easy.

When Megan first came to live with Carol, communication was one of their biggest challenges. Megan’s answer to nearly every question was “no.” Whether she wanted something, needed help, or was being invited to participate in an activity, the response was almost always the same. It was difficult to know what Megan truly wanted or needed.

Many people might have become discouraged, but Carol chose patience. She learned that if she kept asking questions gently and creatively, eventually she would reach the question that didn’t receive a “no.” Little by little, she began to understand Megan’s preferences, personality, and unique way of communicating.

One thing Carol quickly discovered was that Megan thrives on routine. Having a predictable schedule helps her feel comfortable and confident, while new experiences often take time and encouragement. As Carol’s understanding of Megan’s communication grew, so did her ability to shape routines that reflected Megan’s needs - showing how meaningful communication and consistent routine work hand in hand to build trust, reduce uncertainty, and create space for growth. This understanding has allowed Carol to support Megan in ways that honor her need for consistency while still helping her explore new opportunities.

Those small breakthroughs became the foundation of their journey together.

Over time, Carol and Megan worked on daily living skills, using positive reinforcement and incentives to encourage desired behaviors and build independence. What once seemed impossible slowly became routine. Megan began participating in more activities, developing confidence, and exploring new experiences.

Today, Megan attends a day program and enjoys many community activities through The Arc, including dances, Saturday Recreation, and Beacon Friday nights for dinner. Interestingly, she may still say “no” when asked if she wants to go but Carol knows better now. Once Megan arrives, she has a wonderful time.

For someone who once refused nearly every opportunity, that growth is remarkable.

At home, Megan enjoys many of the things that make life meaningful: shopping trips, movies, arts and crafts, and spending time with people she cares about. She especially loves helping make chicken salad and never turns down an opportunity to bake chocolate cupcakes. Anything chocolate quickly becomes a favorite.

Recently, Carol has continued introducing Megan to new experiences, including camping adventures and opportunities to spend more time in the community. Looking ahead, Carol is excited about enrolling Megan at Orchard Hill, where she can enjoy swimming and further expand her community involvement and social connections.

It is hearing Megan communicate a need instead of remaining silent. It is watching Megan advocate for herself. It is seeing confidence grow with each new experience. It is witnessing a young woman, who once answered every question with “no,” begin to find her voice.

The Adult Foster Care program made this journey possible. Through AFC, Megan has a safe, supportive home where she is encouraged to grow, learn, and participate in the community. At the same time, Carol has found a deeply rewarding purpose helping someone discover independence one step at a time.

For Carol, every small change brings joy. Every new skill is worth celebrating. And every time Megan speaks up for herself, it is a reminder that progress is not always measured in giant leaps.

Sometimes, it begins with learning that behind every “no” is a voice waiting to be heard.
