Michael's story

In December 2024, Michael transitioned to one of our residential programs, and from the very beginning, he became an excellent fit for the home. Michael quickly adjusted to his new environment, built positive relationships with his housemates, and embraced his daily routines. It was clear that he was not only settling in but truly beginning to thrive among his peers.

Michael carries a powerful life story. He shared that he once served in the military and later experienced homelessness. During that time, he struggled deeply, struggling to find food, a safe place to sleep, and even his most basic needs. Those experiences shaped him, strengthened his faith, and taught him gratitude. He explained that during one of the most challenging periods of his life, before going to rehabilitation and eventually moving to our residential home, he made a promise to God and said that if he were ever given a safe place to sleep and the essentials he needed, he would always remain grateful to God.

This December 2025, during his ISP meeting, Michael shared his story with the Division Director of Residential Support ABI and his DDS Service Coordinator. His words were deeply moving. He spoke with sincerity, gratitude, and humility. He expressed his gratitude to God, The Arc of Opportunity, and DDS for giving him a chance at stability, dignity, and peace. His story stayed with all of us because it reflected resilience, faith, and hope.

Michael also shared heartfelt appreciation for the staff at his new program. He spoke about how staff make him feel comfortable, respected, and cared for. He mentioned how when staff assist him with personal care and daily support, they treat him with dignity and compassion, never making him feel less than or embarrassed. Instead, they make him feel valued and human. That care has had a profound impact on his confidence and emotional well-being.

Michael currently uses a wheelchair. According to his story, he was once able to walk but later experienced an amputation. Despite these challenges, Michael remains positive, grateful, and spiritually grounded. He often speaks about God and believes strongly that God has carried him through his most challenging moments and continues to bless his life.

What makes Michael’s story so powerful is not just what he has endured, but how he chooses to live today. He is thankful. He is strong. He is hopeful. He is happy. Michael continues to strive forward with courage and gratitude, reminding all of us that even after hardship, loss, and struggle, there is still room for joy, dignity, gratitude and hope.
