The Arc Transforms Katie's Life Journey

Katie started living in The Arc's newly constructed Hubbardston group home in August of 2018. Katie's life journey has not been easy. Before this transition, she resided in a nursing home facility recovering from a traumatic brain injury that occurred nearly 3 years ago. Unfortunately, this injury was life-altering and left her and her family with little hope of regaining her many abilities. Doctors told Katie she would never walk or talk again. Additionally, therapeutic supports in her nursing facility were exhausted, leaving a bleak prognosis.

Katie's opportunity to reside in her community was life-changing. Katie now has a team of professionals at The Arc who focus on her abilities, with the goal of increasing her independence and quality of life. Physical and occupational therapy provided rapid results and trained staff support Katie with her challenges. Within 60 days, Katie was bearing weight by utilizing a stander and using an iPad application to communicate simple commands and responses to staff.

Today, Katie is now able to communicate with her mother, friends, and daughter, all who frequently visit her in her home. Katie's transition into the community has expanded her horizons and The Arc is committed to supporting her new life journey.
