Barbara’s Journey: A Story of Strength, Support, and Community

Barbara has been a long-term and cherished member of our AFC Program. She also attends our Day Program full time. Over the past year, Barbara has faced a series of significant challenges, particularly related to her health, which required a rapid and unexpected transition from AFC to residential care. This shift included an emergency temporary placement and several provider changes all within a very short period of time.

Despite the overwhelming nature of these changes, Barbara’s spirit remained strong. The dedicated staff at The Arc stepped up in every way to ensure her wellbeing. They increased home visits, nursing oversight, and ensured Barbara was still transported to her day program. Their unwavering support helped keep Barbara’s light shining through a time of rapid change.

In addition, the team also provided training and support to new providers to help Barbara feel safe, supported, and comfortable in her new environment. All necessary resources were carefully coordinated to support a smooth transition. And through it all, Barbara’s well-known smile, the one that lights up every room, never left her face.

Barbara has remained actively engaged in her day program. She not only adapted to the changes but truly thrived, maintaining her joyful outlook and positive energy despite ongoing challenges.

Barbara’s story is a powerful reminder that, intentional team collaboration, advocacy, attention to health and safety, and the support of a consistent and caring community, we can overcome even the most difficult challenges.
