Like many individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Alice struggled to find her place in the world. She was in and out of a variety of living situations and was even confined to a nursing home. Everything started to change when Alice connected with The Arc. Through our Adult Family Care program, Alice was able to take control of her life and make her own decisions. She chose a shared living home. Today, Alice is confident, joyful, and connected with her community.
Alice worked hard to get her health to a place where she could participate in The Arc’s day program that offered her options and opportunities for growth. After some initial hesitation, Alice quickly learned to engage and take advantage of everything the day program had to offer. A well-rounded individual, Alice enjoys horticulture, art therapy, pet therapy, and weekend recreational activities. These wonderful programs are available to Alice and other individuals because of donors like you.
With new found confidence in her abilities, Alice was ready to take on larger and more serious challenges. Alice joined The Arc’s Self-Advocacy group and learned how the threats to Medicaid would affect her new life. With this knowledge, Alice attended storytelling workshops where she learned how to share her story effectively. She took these new skills and made phone calls to her senators, went to meetings with political staff, and attended town hall meetings in the community. She seizes every opportunity to make herself seen and heard as she fights for her right to continue living a fulfilling life.
