The Skills Trainer assists the individual in normative home based activities and during community based activities to increase the individual’s development of independent living and community living skills.

Positions Location & Hours:

  • Fitchburg: Scheduled is somewhat flexible.  Total of 5 to 7 hours per week can be done Thursday (5pm - 7pm), Friday (5pm - 7pm) and/or Saturday (after 1pm).

Responsibilities

  • Assists the individual in participating in home based activities and community based activities, both generic and specialized.
  • Works in the home with the individual to help increase daily living skills or independent living skills, including hygiene tasks, chores, meal preparation, money management, etc.
  • Works in the community with individuals to help increase community living skills development, which may include learning to use the library, making a purchase at a store, or participating in a group based community setting like a swim program or the gym.
  • Actively advocates for individuals served and demonstrates agency mission and values in all interpersonal and professional relations.
  • Knowledgeable about community resources to better assist individuals served in achieving their goals while seeking to empower and enhance their quality of life.
  • Conducts oneself professionally by maintaining respect, following regulations and agency policies and adhering to confidentiality requirements in all assigned duties.
  • Attends mandatory trainings and meetings as assigned and required. Maintains all required certifications.
  • Cross functional communication skills, in written and oral Engilsh, which convey clear & concise information in a professional & respectful manner to individuals supported, family members/guardians, government agencies, community partners & employees.
  • Physical demands include: Frequent standing, pushing, pulling, walking, stooping, lifting and twisting.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in a related field (education, psychology, etc.) and a minimum of two years of relevant experience working on skills development with individuals with developmental disabilities, OR
  • Bachelor Degree in unrelated field and a minimum of three years working with individuals with disabilities, OR
  • A High School Diploma or GED Certificate and minimum of five years of relevant experience working on skills development with individuals with disabilities.
  • A valid driver’s license and acceptable CORI/Finger printing and driving record are required at all times during employment with The Arc of Opportunity.
  • Use of personal vehicles is required and must meet all state requirements to include valid registration, insurance, and safety standards.
  • Flexible schedule required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to kneel, bend and carry items.
  • Ability to physically assist individuals according to their needs.
  • Ability to sustain periods of walking, standing, and sitting.
  • Ability to see, speak and hear.
  • Ability to perform physical restraint if necessary.
  • Demonstrated superior communication skills, both in verbal and written English.
  • Functional and situational reasoning to follow policy, problem solve, exercise sound judgment, prioritize multiple tasks, and manage crisis.
  • Computer literacy skills.
