Leisure and social activities play an important role in the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities. The extensive variety of recreation programs, sponsored by The Arc of Opportunity, provides therapuetic recreational services to hundreds of individuals with disabilities every year. Recreational services can offer enrichment in people’s day-to-day lives by offering a chance to explore new activities, have social interactions with others and have fun!
The Arc of Opportunity's Recreation Activities and Events
Below you will find what The Arc of Opportunity offers on a regular or annual basis:
- Weekend Recreation Club
The Weekend Recreation Club (formerly the Drop-In Club) offers a variety of social and leisure activities to participants over the age of 18.
Cost: Club dues are $10.00 per visit plus the cost of activities scheduled that day
Members receive a bi-monthly calendar listing the activities and hours of operation for each weekend. Prospective members receive a handbook and complete an intake packet prior to their first visit.
The Weekend Recreation Club is generally open on Saturdays from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m unless time change is noted in calendar. Activities include beach trips, fairs, shopping, movies, etc.
- Weekend Trips
Our Recreation program offers 7 overnight weekend trips and 1 multiple day getaway, typically 5-7 days. These trips give individuals a chance to experience travelling while being chaperoned to ensure safety and maintaining self-care.

Monthly dances are offered through the months of September through May for people ages 18+ from 7pm-9:45pm on Fridays @ The Christ Church in Fitchburg.
Cost: $7.00 a person which includes a drink and a snack
We ask that individuals with independent time have an ID card on them in case of an emergency. Individuals without alone time need to be accompanied by a staff.
There is one holiday dance in December that is held at the Fitchburg Senior Center. We have a catered buffet dinner along with holiday music and dancing. Cost is $26 per person including staff. Look for the holiday dance sign up in our Recreation/Family Support Newsletter.
The Arc of Opportunity has a bowling league that meets on Thursdays from 3:15pm-4:30pm through the months of September through March @ Mason's Bowling in Leominster, MA.
Cost: $5.50 for members of The Arc and $6.00 for non-members
- Mini Golf
During the summer months The Arc of Opportunity has a mini-golf league that meets on Thursdays from 6pm-7:30pm @ Mason's Bowling Center (outside where ice cream is!)
Cost: $5 for member of The Arc and $6 for non-members
- Special Olympics
We offer several sports through the Special Olympics of Massachusetts (SOMA). Children can participate as young as 3 years old in our Young Athletes program. At age 8, athletes are eligible to compete in competitions and games through SOMA. Athletes can continue playing sports in SOMA all the way through late adulthood. Special Olympics offers people with disabilities a chance to work on athletic abilities, learn sportsmanship, become healthier through exercise, gain new social skills and much more.
