Kyle, You Rock!

There is always excitement when observing clients work towards their fullest potential. Kyle has been a member of The Arc's Adult Foster Care (AFC) program since 2013 and currently attends a weekly day program. Kyle is supported by a team of professionals from The Arc including Case Manager Brenda, Community Health Worker Josiah, and myself as his nurse. Kyle lives at home with his Mom Lee, Step-Dad Bob, and six dogs.

With The Arc's support, his parents noticed the growth of Kyle's independence in his self-care and helping around the house. Kyle's family frequently assembles large puzzles. He has improved his patience by learning to take turns. His Step-Dad is exceptionally supportive, reminding him daily to, “Listen and try hard!” On a visit, I observed Kyle "listen and try hard" by showing compassion for his Mom, who enjoys a cup of tea after work. Kyle listened and took the time to have a cup ready for her when she walked through the door. This kind gesture displayed Kyle's growth.

Kyle is involved in a range of activities that showcase his many talents. One talent includes a love for woodworking. He recently constructed a breakfast tray, shelf, and Christmas countdown clock. For the past three years, Kyle has played football through Special Olympics. Able to play in various positions, he most enjoys offense as a running back for The Shamrocks. This Special Olympic Football Team recently won the 2018 State Championship. As a year-round athlete, Kyle plays softball for The Wolverines and just started basketball season with The Panthers.

Musically inclined, Kyle also plays the drums, guitar, and sings. A trifecta! His favorite bands include AC/DC and Kiss. Last July, Kyle's uncle brought him to an AC/DC concert at Gillette Stadium. With some encouragement, I had the pleasure witnessing Kyle sing and dance to one of his favorite songs “Highway to Hell.” With Kyle’s wonderful talents, independence, and committed family, he deserves a standing ovation. Kyle you rock!
