An Internship of Opportunity

Bus traffic is a regular occurrence at The Arc, as the most accessible method of transportation for individuals we support. However, when a big yellow school bus arrives, a unique passenger is seated. On board is Brooke, a junior at Monty Tech High School in Fitchburg, who interns with The Arc 3 days a week.

In the Health Occupations Program, Brooke chose to complete her clinical hours this semester at The Arc. Her ultimate goal is to become a Registered Nurse. She mentioned her excitement to be here because “you [The Arc] offer everything." During the day, Brooke never stops moving and is treated as a peer among the other nursing staff. Her duties include feeding, transferring, and obtaining vital signs. Additionally, she completes important data entry for numerous daily activities. Being funny, she mentioned this wasn't her "favorite" part of the day. Brooke enjoys interacting with people of all abilities while learning hands-on nursing skills. Her most noted takeaway from her internship; learning every individual has a different form of communication.

Brooke described being able to interact and perform activities with individuals as "fulfilling." When Brooke was helping an individual draw, a nosebleed from across the room caught her attention. She instantly went into action, grabbing gloves and gauze. Brooke brought calmness to a potentially traumatic situation for all individuals in the room. Brooke believes programs at The Arc should be, "recognized for the value and quality of life brought to those supported." The Arc recognizes Brooke for supporting people who are often overlooked in society and wishes you the best.
