Brian Finds His Place

Brian is a member of The Arc’s AFC program. He lives in Baldwinville with his caregiver Judy and is currently employed at Blueprint Restaurant and at McNally’s Bar and Grill which are both located in Westminster. Both restaurants have the same owner and provide a friendly, inviting atmosphere where patrons can dine on regional favorites prepared in a unique and creative manner. Brian said he likes his job and he especially enjoys the camaraderie of his co-workers. He feels that he is a valued member of the staff and has developed close working relationships with his supervisor and peers.

Like many of us, Brian has held other jobs which haven’t been a good fit for him. He is a hard worker and is very motivated to work in the community. He spends a good portion of his free time doing odd jobs for friends and neighbors. Brian likes mowing lawns and stacking firewood to earn extra money for himself. He had been waiting patiently for his day program to help him find a suitable job. He wanted to work at a company which offered him regular hours and allowed him the opportunity to earn money for himself. Brian feels he has developed new work skills and a greater sense of responsibility at his current position. Brian realizes the importance of arriving to work on time, making sure that his work is of high quality, and working for the benefit of the team.

Brian works primarily in the kitchen at Blueprint, washing dishes, organizing supplies, and helps unload trucks making deliveries. He also helps with the catering business at McNally’s. Brian said that he tends to split his time between the two businesses and will usually spend at least one day a week at McNally’s. Brian works a total of four days a week at the two businesses. When I visit with Brian and Judy at their home, Brian always talks about his work in positive terms. In particular, he likes the independence that earning a paycheck gives him. He uses his wages to go shopping, go to the movies, and dine out with his friends. Having a steady job also gives him a sense of accomplishment and purpose in life. Congratulations Brian! Keep up the good work!
