We Have Come a Long Way: Inclusion and Community Awareness for People with Disabilities

Many of us have heard the term “inclusion” before, but what does it actually mean and look like when supporting people with special needs?  Inclusion is the concept of creating a community as a whole that accommodates diverse populations by making buildings accessible, welcoming all people no matter what their differences are among other efforts that make our society inclusive for every individual.  The initiative of incorporating inclusion has created an environment where all people can feel supported and a part of their community regardless of their challenges.

Coming full circle in 2015, our society has changed a lot and is embracing diversity among people more so than ever by utilizing inclusion.  In my position as the recreation/family support director, I have witnessed these changes first hand.  On April 18th and 19th, I had the pleasure of chaperoning a weekend long trip in Boston to see a Red Sox Game in addition to enjoying a ride on the Duck Boat Tours through the historical parts of the city.  At the Red Sox Game we were able to be accommodated in ADA approved seats and the Boston Duck Tour company encouraged us to come for a tour with great enthusiasm.  We had an integrated tour of Boston with people mixed in from the community.  The tour guide offered to all of The Arc travelers to try and steer the boat in the water.  The other people on the boat graciously watched them participate and smiled at the brave ones who accepted the challenge.  The pictures included in this article show Danny B., a participant of The Arc of Opportunity, confidently steering the boat alongside a sailor and enjoying his time at the Red Sox Game.

It is heart-warming when I witness a stranger to take an extra second out of their day to stop and say hi to our individuals or go out of their way to help them.  I am proud of how far we as a society have come in advocating for individuals with special needs and making sure all have the same chance to be included.

The Arc of Opportunity will continue to be a leader in providing unique recreation experiences for our individuals in a safe and supportive manner.  To learn more about our recreation services, please contact the Recreation/Family Support Department by dialing 978-343-6662 and asking for Jillian Kastal or Jim Casperson.
