Supporting People to Shine Independence

Meet Keisha, a long time participant in the DESE program at The Arc of Opportunity.  Keisha is excelling in the DESE program!  This is due to her hard work and effort along with her support team.  Due to the skills that she has been learning and building upon, Keisha has become a more active community participant whose independence shines.  Keisha works on a consistent basis with Skills Instructors and her Behavior Therapist.  Along with her Service Navigator at The Arc of Opportunity and Keisha’s family, Keisha has built numerous skills that allow her input in all the decisions of her daily life.  Some things that Keisha enjoys, is going shopping, participating in community activities and spending time with her friends, family and dogs.  Keisha especially enjoys shopping at Wal-Mart and other local stores.   However, her favorite activity is going to the Local YMCA, working out on the treadmill and then swimming in the pool.  Since beginning the DESE program, Keisha has gained numerous skills to assist her in becoming more confident and independent, such as creating a shopping list using real pictures, traveling to the store and then locating and purchasing the items.  Keisha has also learned to fold and put away her own laundry, a skill that did not exist before starting the DESE program.

Keisha and her family have been active partners with The Arc of Opportunity in Keisha’s DESE program.  As Keisha has aged within the program, her skills have increased, opening new doors and new skills for Keisha!  Keisha is a true example of someone with many abilities!  We at The Arc of Opportunity are thrilled to be her partner in this journey until her transition to adulthood.
