The Fabric of Our Fundamentals

Learn from our clients. Collaborate with our partners. Practice the human touch. At The Arc of Opportunity we thread together these key components to create meaningful opportunities and experiences for the people we support. As proof for the how the fabric of these fundamentals can work to warm the lives of our clients, look at our community partnership with Warmer Winters.

A local nonprofit with a mission to help people help others, Warmer Winters trains volunteers to knit, sew and crochet to create warm clothing for our neighbors in need. Operating for more than a decade, Warmer Winters has distributed thousands and thousands of handcrafted gifts of warmth, such as hats, gloves and scarves. The Arc of Opportunity is proud to be a part of this effort as a community partner.

Named Community Partner of the Year by Warmer Winters in 2015, we at The Arc of Opportunity have since further strengthened our connection. Collaborating for weekly workshops with Warmer Winters Executive Director Judy Gentry, our knitting club, a part of our Community Supports programming, has grown to involve and meaningfully engage more and more individuals, like Heather.

In addition to being independently employed in the community at Hannaford, supported by our Employment Services program, Heather became involved in the knitting club and quickly became an active and outspoken volunteer with Warmer Winters. As her involvement with Warmer Winters developed and showed great value, Heather was invited to join the Board of Directors, and was recently inducted to the Board.

As a member of the Board, Heather practices the human touch and dedicates her volunteer time to spread the word of Warmer Winters’ work, recruit new volunteers, promote events and raise awareness of the nonprofit’s mission. “We help a lot of people stay warm,” Heather said, exhibiting pride in her role as a key contributor to advancement of this social mission. “It’s a great thing to be a part of.”

The Arc of Opportunity is indeed a bridge to our community, as this example displays; and it’s through such significant community connections that we’re able to truly enhance the quality of life for the people we support. We do this by listening and learning from our clients, collaborating with our partners, and practicing that human touch that makes all our lives warmer.
