This brought us to the highlight of the evening – the presentation of our four most special awards – the Mary “Ma” Maylin Coach of the Year, the Arc Unified Partner of the Year, the Judy Comeau Memorial Athlete of the Year and the Donny Roy Memorial Good Sportsman of the Year Awards.
The Coach of the Year Award was presented to Roger Hoyt, coach of the Jaguars Cubs soccer team by Jean and Art Merriam. They describe Roger as a coach with a constant friendly smile who has taken a group of kids with a multitude of ages and abilities and made them into a team. They point out that a successful coach has to possess the personality of an angel, the patience of a saint, and eyes in the back of the head, and in Roger, we have it all. Thanks and Congratulations Roger!
The Unified Partner of the Year was presented to Julie Bergstrand by Art & Jean Merriam and Roberta Tassone. Julie plays during all sports seasons and was actually nominated by 4 different people. They say she impresses her coaches with her positive attitude, patience, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm, especially with the athletes who love being around her. It is not a priority for her to score or be a star but works to showcase the athletes on her team. She is quick to compliment someone and likes to make a positive difference. While she prefers to be behind the scenes, she is a real leader on the teams on which she plays. Thanks and Congratulations Julie!
The Athlete of the Year Award was presented to Sam Gustafson by Jean and Art Merriam. Sam is described as a young man who exemplifies the best in attitude, commitment, flexibility, and accomplishment both on and off the playing field. He is a year-round participant in Arc sports who is known for his consistently positive attitude, whether it be dealing with the challenges that arise in learning the responsibilities of a new position on a sports team, playing with teammates of differing abilities, or dealing with the illness of a family member. In fact, Sam has no concept of giving up and believes that there is nothing that he can not do. He is truly a role model for us all. Congratulations Sam!
The Good Sportsman of the Year Award was presented to Tracy Mazzerole by Karin Thibaudeau. Karin says Tracy shows respect for herself and others, is always happy and social, a team player and positive role model. She shows up to practice and competition ready to swim, excited to be among friends and thrilled to be in the pool. She cheers for every member of her team, equally pleased by her own success and theirs. She remains positive when she doesn’t win. She is full of enthusiasm, has an infectious smile, a strong willed spirit, and an energetic attitude that is contagious. Tracy is a ray of sunshine, no matter the weather, for all those around her. As one of the Special Olympic mottos states “It’s all about Attitude”…and you cannot beat Tracy’s! She epitomizes good sportsmanship. Congratulations Tracy!
The final item on the program was the recognition of all athletes and the presentation of a small gift to each athlete present. After congratulations and thanks to all who participated in the Arc sports program and in helping to make this year’s Award Night successful, everyone enjoyed socializing with refreshments to complete the evening.
