Letter to the Editor: Banish the “R” Word

Barbara S. has been involved with Alliance for Resource Management for more than 30 years. She receives vocational services through ARC Community Services and residential supports through Matson Community Services. She has long been a self-advocate and believes it is her responsibility to make her voice heard on behalf of herself and others with disabilities. Barbara recently mailed the following letter to the eight area newspapers.

When asked why it was important to her to speak out about banning the “R Word” Barbara stated, “I have been here for 30 years. I think I can make a difference by speaking out about this issue.” Barbara urges everyone to speak out about this important matter. Feel free to share her message with others so you too can help change the world.

Dear Editor,

My name is Barbara Ann S. and I would like you to put this in the paper to raise awareness of the stigmatism associated with people with disabilities. Currently, there is a nationwide campaign to banish the “R” word when describing characteristics of individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities. The “R” word refers to the words retard or retarded.

We do not want to be labeled any longer. Each person is unique and it is unfair that we are all lumped together under this category. We should try to build on each other’s strengths instead of degrading those who may be different.

Sincerely,

Barbara Ann S.
